Surplus drop not drastic

China's trade surplus may not drop sharply next year and could still reach $250 billion, Chen Jiagui, deputy head of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told a China Business Journal forum yesterday.

Chen also said the economic slowdown is accelerating in the fourth quarter, but the country could achieve 9 percent economic growth next year, well above the World Bank's forecast.
