Deadline set for replacing people's communes
State leaders have directed that township governments should replace people's commune administrations by the end of 1984.
The townships, they said in a circular, should generally be based on people's communes. Governments should also be set up in rural towns wherever possible to promote economic and cultural development, the circular said.
More than 12,700 township governments have already been set up throughout China.
Housing planned for foreign oil workers
A 2,000-unit housing complex is to be built in the suburbs of Guangzhou for the families of foreign workers on oil exploration projects in the South China Sea.
The project, called Golden Lake Residential Neighborhood, has been designed to make the foreign workers feel at home. Sports facilities will include squash, tennis, bowling alleys, swimming pools, a gymnasium, sauna, and soccer pitch as well as archery and a jogging track.
The project, after completion in 3 to 5 years, will have its own cinema, disco, banks, police and fire stations, restaurants, school and nursery, chapel, supermarket and shops.
