China seeks to further develop tourism
China is to speed up the development of its fast-growing and lucrative tourist industry.
Measures including opening more cities to tourists, building more hotels and offering extra discounts to tourist groups and students will be carried out with the aim to attract 5 million foreign visitors to China by the year 2000 - six times the number last year.
In the first half of this year, all resorts across the country hosted 4.41 million visitors, an increase of nearly 11 percent over the same period last year.
Sites boost for joint ventures
The Minhang area in Shanghai, designated a new industrial zone producing export goods, has begun to provide construction sites for joint ventures, according to municipal officials.
The first venture to be built there will be the Shanghai Universal Toy Company, sponsored by Universal International of Hong Kong and the Shanghai Toy Import and Export Corporation along with other Chinese enterprises. Negotiations are in progress for another 19 joint ventures.
Minhang, 30 km from the city center, has an area of 230 hectares. Infrastructure in the area including roads and drainage is under construction.
First modern grass seed farm in China
China's first modern fodder grass seed farm, using technology and equipment imported from New Zealand, has opened in Guizhou province.
The 133-hectare farm, involving an investment of $580,000, will each year be able to supply 38 tons of high-yield fodder grass seed to Guizhou and other provinces in south China.
Guizhou, as one of the country's major livestock-breeding centers, covers 5.3 hectares of pastureland in hilly areas.
