Staal leads Pens to dramatic comeback victory

China Daily | Updated: 2008-11-13 08:11

DETROIT: Ruslan Fedotenko scored the overtime winner to earn the Pittsburgh Penguins a dramatic 7-6 comeback victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.

The Penguins, beaten by the Red Wings in last season's Stanley Cup finals, looked headed for another loss until Jordan Staal forced overtime with a third period hat-trick before setting up Fedotenko for the winner 3:49 into the extra session.

Staal, who scored only two goals in the Penguins first 14 games, claimed three in just over 11 minutes and in overtime stripped Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk of the puck and feathered a pass to Fedotenko who hammered the winner past Chris Osgood.
