I was dressing my son after a shower when he said: "Mai go pi?" I thought he was making a joke like "selling dog skin", but he repeated it several times and I finally got it: "May I go pee?"

Oh my, of all the English phrases my son's teachers could have chosen to coach the 3 year olds, why this one? I tried to change it to, "May I go to the toilet", but my boy either found it too long to say, or has a strong faith in his teachers. All I could do was to make sure he said it correctly.

Many Chinese parents want their children to speak English. Some expectant women play VOA or BBC programs to their as-yet-unborn child. Meanwhile, immersion-English kindergartens have mushroomed in the past few years, demanding a monthly fee several times over the average.
