Guitars still hold sway

Countless bars play hip-hop, 90's dance and the local brand of cheesy pop, but it's hard to find somewhere where guitars still hold sway. D22, between Wudaokou Station and Peking University, in the Haidian district, is a small but lively club, attracting decent crowds, even midweek. With entertainment provided by up-and-coming rock and punk bands, of various qualities, or the occasional free screenings of classic movies, there's always something going on. With no separate green room for the bands, you get to mingle with the future of Chinese Rock, and buying the band a drink is a great way to show your appreciation.

Staffed by musicians, film makers and other arty types, you'd expect the service to be a little laid back, and whilst it's not the speediest service I've received, the bar staff are genuinely friendly, though they do tend to have to look up the recipes if you order off of the cocktail board.

Beers are cold, and there are a few brands from the West if you're feeling homesick, all weighing in at about 15 yuan a bottle. Spirits are about 35 yuan a shot, with our old friends Jack and Johnny making their presence known.
