Mod classic with a Spanish twist

By Wu Liping | China Daily | Updated: 2008-11-08 08:01

Accomplished Spanish artist Manolo Valdes produces a kind of montage between a one-dimensional and three-dimensional perspective.

The portraits of women are executed with blocks of contrasting colors - red, green and yellow - that are sharply bounded by black brushstrokes. Against the bright background of orange and blue, the vase and flowers stand out in a dark cobalt color.

At the ongoing exhibition held at the National Art Museum of China, Valdes' debut in China, viewers can check out the artist's representative works created during the past two decades, including Portrait of Marco, Odalisca V, Reina Menina and Woman on a Horse.
