Medoc nothing to wine about

By Cheng Anqi | China Daily | Updated: 2008-11-08 08:01

For linguists, the word "medoc" is associated with the Latin expression, "In medio aquae", meaning "between the waters". Medoc in France is a land bordered by the Atlantic to the west and the Gironde to the east. This triangular peninsula is ideally situated for fine wine.

Situated on the 45th parallel, Medoc has a balanced climate and environment. The combination creates the best conditions for growing ripe grapes.

Besides the unique climate, Medoc has the advantage of a varied terroir, including ay-limestone plateaus, scree-covered expanses, outcrops of Garonnaise gravel, especially in areas close to the estuary, land rich in alluvium. The eight appellations of Medoc are in the northern part of the peninsula. Its 5,700 hectares of vines makes it the largest appellation in this part of Bordeaux.
