Fruitful Taiwan trip

Chen Yunlin's Taiwan trip was safe and successful.

The heightened security worked. Two weeks ago, a colleague of Chen's was knocked to the ground by pro-independence mobsters while he was on an academic trip to the island. That incident prompted suspicions that Chen would postpone his planned visit. We are glad he did not. And he did not turn a blind eye to the political reality there.

Chen told his hosts he had heard the voices against him being there. We all did. And saw how desperately the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) wanted to turn the clock back. We saw violence. And blood.
