Stocks gain for 1st time in four days

SHANGHAI: The key mainland index shot up 3.16 percent yesterday, cheered by the overnight surge on Wall Street and on the back of Barack Obama's win in the US presidential election.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 53.91 points to close at 1760.61 yesterday, after touching a one-week high of 1,788.258.

Advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones by 873 to 58. The major gauge was down 0.76 percent on Tuesday to end at 1706.7, the lowest closing point in 26 months.
