Han Costume making

China Daily | Updated: 2008-11-01 07:51

Many Chinese girls dream of wearing traditional costumes characterized by a loose silk robe with wide sleeves and a belt at the waist, just as ancient beauties did.

So did Gao Jing, 28, who majored in art and is now a Han (206 BC-AD 220) costume maker, dedicated to reviving traditional Han clothes. "When I was a small girl, I liked drawing beauties dressed in various Han costumes," she says. "It laid a good foundation for my current designs."

Last Sunday, two Chinese newlyweds dressed in Han-style wedding costumes designed by Gao, and acted out a Han ritual, like bride escorting, kowtowing, toasting, knotting hair and more.
