Hurricane Omar weakens

Hurricane Omar weakened rapidly over the open Atlantic yesterday after swirling through the northern Leeward Islands, the US National Hurricane Center said.

The storm had top sustained winds of 140 kph by 11 am EDT (1500 GMT), making it a minimal Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of storm intensity, the Miami-based center said.
