Twelve people were killed in two separate coal mine incidents in the past week, in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Shaanxi province.

In the first case, nine were killed in a coal mine gas blast on Friday morning in Guangxi, a local safety official said.

The accident occurred at about 9:20 am in Heshan Coal Mine Co Ltd in Laibin city.

A total of 83 miners were underground at the time of the blast. Nine bodies were found, while the other 74 miners escaped out of the shaft safely.

The mine is the largest in Guangxi with an annual production capacity of about 8 million tons. It is a joint venture with a Hong Kong company.

In the second colliery mishap, three miners who were trapped in a coal mine flood on Oct 5 have been found dead, said the authorities in Shaanxi province on Friday. A tunnel of the Chang'an Coal Mine in Xunyi flooded at 6 pm on Oct 5 while 16 miners were working underground. Thirteen escaped unhurt the following day.
