Freed hostages recount chaotic release

Mirella Degiuli, one of the five Italians who were part of a tour group kidnapped in Egypt and taken on a 10-day dash across the Sahara to the frontier of Chad, is greeted by her two sons David (left), and Diego as she arrives in Turin, northern Italy yesterday. AP

A European tour group kidnapped in the Sahara Desert was abruptly freed after a phone call to one of the captors, and all 19 hostages piled into a single car, some clinging to the roof as they drove 200 miles to safety.
