赤脚医生 (chijiao yisheng)

Barefoot doctor

A term used to describe part-time paramedical workers in China's rural areas during the "cultural revolution" (1966-76). Undertaken mostly by people from medical family backgrounds or educated urban youths assigned to work in the countryside, they also did farming work in their spare time. As the primary health personnel of the vast rural areas in the early stages of the rural cooperative medical system, they made great contributions to healthcare in the country's rural areas during that period. Since 1985, they have been replaced by village doctors.
