Exploring the heavens to promote growth

China's space program is not for military purposes but to promote economic development.

"China's manned space program has not carried out a single military task," Cui Jijun, director of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu province, said yesterday.

Cui said Chinese scientists see the space program as scientific exploration, and hope it will help boost the country's innovation capability.
