STAGE
China National Ballet will present The Red Detachment of Women, a Chinese ballet best known for being watched by US President Nixon during his 1972 visit to Beijing. Debuted in 1964, the performance is the first and most successful full-length Chinese ballet, with both its theme and content reflecting a very unique Chinese style. It is said that The Red Detachment of Women was a prelude to Chinese ballet dancers trying to establish a Chinese identity using an essentially foreign art form. The piece has been hailed as a model of the successful combination of Western ballet technique with Chinese folk dancing.
