For thousands of years, Caohai, or Sea of Grasses, a lake in the remote western part of Guizhou province, has been a paradise for wildlife, especially birds.

At an altitude of 2,200 m in Weining, a county near the city of Bijie, 30-sq-km Caohai is the largest natural freshwater lake on the Guizhou Plateau.

It is the habitat for more than 100 species of birds, including a dozen of endangered species.
