Make baby formula safe

China Daily | Updated: 2008-09-13 08:17

It is appalling that 59 babies in Gansu province were diagnosed with kidney stones, and that one died, after ingesting Sanlu brand's baby formula. Similar cases of sickened babies have been reported in other parts of the country.

The turnaround by the manufacturer of the baby formula has been nothing less than dramatic. In less than two days, Sanlu Group went from denying a possible problem with its baby formula to recalling 700 tons of the product as it has been contaminated with a chemical called melamine.

The latest news from the manufacturer on Friday say that cow farmers put melamine in the milk they sell to the plant.
