The husband surnamed Pang said he really did not know what to do when his wife delivered the conjoined daughters on Sept 5. Previous checkups had shown no sign the children would be conjoined. The couple, who come from a poor village in western Guangdong's Maoming city, could not afford the fees for the surgery, which totaled more than 100,000 yuan ($14,600). After a thorough examination, doctors decided the surgery had a high likelihood of success. About one in 200,000 births is of conjoined twins. The two kids were detained in Zhuhai waters while paddling a boat to Macao carrying the women from Hunan, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. The students told police they were each given 600 yuan ($88) to help a local trafficker illegally transport the women to Macao. The two boys were educated and released, as they were not old enough to prosecute. The women were put in detention houses for further questioning.
