Save relics from robbers

China Daily | Updated: 2008-09-10 07:39

The frequent occurrence of thefts reveals the loopholes in the current relics management and protection system, says an article in Yanzhao Evening Post. The following is an excerpt:

On September 3, Dunhuang Museum had its four bronze mirrors stolen. One of the mirrors belonged to the category of first-class national cultural relics. As conceded by the head of safety office of the Gansu provincial administration of cultural heritage, the relics were stolen due to the loopholes in the security work.

Thefts also occurred in the museum's neighbor, the center for Dunhuang modern grotto art, where a relic of a Buddha painting disappeared about one month ago. Up till now, Gansu province has seen relics being stolen six times, resulting in the loss of 15 relics, including two pieces of first-class national ones.
