SPD chancellor nominee

Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) was expected to nominate Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier later yesterday to run against Chancellor Angela Merkel in next year's election, party members said.

The decision is an attempt to unite the divided SPD, which is threatened by the rise of a new far-left party and trailing Merkel's conservatives badly in opinion polls.
