Corporate aid to colleges

China Daily | Updated: 2008-09-06 08:01

Universities in China should learn how to properly handle growing corporate donations, says an article in Xinmin Evening Post. The following is an excerpt:

On August 30, HSBC donated 150 million yuan ($22 million) to Peking University through its charitable arm, the Hong Kong Bank Foundation, to support the development of its Graduate School of Business in Shenzhen. The deal required the school be renamed the Peking University HSBC Graduate School of Business.

Companies donate generously to support colleges and colleges agree to use their brand names in return. This inevitably triggers the controversy of "college commercialization".
