Phones link Fujian and Hong Kong
A Japananese program that controls long-distance telephone calls between Fuzhou and Hong Kong was put into trial operation recently.
The direct dialing system can handle 10,000 calls at a time, according to an official of the Fuzhou Telecommunications Bureau. It will also serve other cities in the province, such as Xiamen.
The system was expected to serve as a subsidiary facility at a time when coastal Fujian and Guangdong provinces have been designated to practice special policies and flexible measures to attract foreign investment.
Generating unit put into use
A 100-megawatt generating unit went into operation at the Huangtai power plant recently in Jinan, Shandong province.
Another similar unit is also to go into operation by the end of the year, bringing the plant's total generating capacity to 325 megawatts, a plant official said.
The Huangtai plant is one of five large and medium-sized thermal power plants in the province that are under construction or expansion currently. Completion of all these projects will provide 1,720 megawatts, 48 percent of the present provincial total.
Electronics industry shows its products
Achievements made in the electronics industry in the past four years were recently commended by vice-premier Wan Li at an exhibition in Beijing, which displayed more than 5,000 new electronics products by 870 enterprises.
While stressing that the modernization of China would be impossible without industry, Wan also urged relevant departments to be pioneers in narrowing the gap between the country and advanced nations.
Priority will be given to developing integrated circuits and computer technology, as China is still 10 to 15 years behind the world's advanced levels in relevant fields, according to the Ministry of Electronics Industry.
