Senior citizen gives life savings to future scholars

A 70-year-old retired engineer surnamed Kang from Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, has donated his life savings of 4 million yuan ($586,000) to the city's No 2 Senior High School, as a foundation for gifted and poverty-stricken students.

Up to 26 students benefited from the fund, which was officially announced on Sunday at the school opening ceremony.
