Decades ago, American intelligence agencies thought they had spotted missile silos hidden deep in the mountains of Fujian province but the circular structures they saw were built for the very opposite reason. A branch of Han people - the Hakka - built the enormous, concentric earthen buildings known as tulou for protection against bandits and wild animals.
