Ramzi takes first gold for Bahrain

China Daily | Updated: 2008-08-21 08:24

Bahrain's Rashid Ramzi won the men's 1,500m on Tuesday when he powered away from the field on the final lap to claim his country's first Olympic gold.

Kenya's Asbel Kiprop, the only runner who could stay with Ramzi, won silver and New Zealand's Nicholas Willis took a surprise bronze, his country's first medal in the event since John Walker won gold in 1976.

"I didn't expect this in my wildest dreams. This didn't come from nothing, I had to work hard, now I can be very proud," said Ramzi.
