Shelter for Taiwan fishermen
The largest fleet ever of 42 Taiwan fishing boats with a total of 389 fishermen anchored at Shenjiamen Harbor, Zhejianig province, seeking shelter from a threatening typhoon.
All fishermen on board were given a warm and hospitable welcome and were supplied with 500 tons of badly needed fresh water.
Ninety-seven of the fishermen who were unable to come ashore because of illness were given free medical treatment by doctors from local hospitals.
Relics protection
A new material was developed by the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to help preserve ancient paintings and other historical relics.
The material is able to filter out 99 percent of the ultraviolet rays of sunlight or lamp light, which badly damages silk, cotton, woolen and linen fabrics as well as paper.
It has now been coated on door and window frames and glass of exhibition cases in the Palace Museum and the Capital Museum in Beijing.
