Musharraf quits, says he did all for country

China Daily | Updated: 2008-08-19 08:12

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced his resignation yesterday, ending a nearly nine-year tenure.

"I have consulted all legal experts and my political supporters. With their advice, I have decided to quit," he said in a televised address to the nation.

Musharraf came to power after a bloodless military coup in 1999. He has ruled the country for almost nine years, when Pakistan joined the US in its war on terrorism and saw an improvement in its ties with neighboring India.
