Reconstruction effort

How efficiently the planned 1 trillion yuan ($145 billion) will be spent in the rebuilding of the areas seriously damaged by the earthquake in May will make a difference to the success of the reconstruction project.

This sum of money estimated to be spent in the three-year reconstruction involving nearly 20 million residents in 51 cities and counties in three provinces is almost as much as the GDP of Sichuan province in 2007 or one-fifth of the nation' fiscal revenue in the same year.

Such a large sum of money will be collected from different channels including aid from the central government, donations, allocation from local coffers and from other localities, and loans from banks, according to the plan unveiled on Tuesday.
