More than sports
The Olympic Games is not just a competition for athletes. It is a mediafest and a business bonanza. The international and Chinese organizers have certainly been successful in publicizing the ongoing Beijing Games.
Widespread media coverage of the Games can promote the public's interest in sports, and inspire other Chinese cities to emulate Beijing in infrastructure development and environmental protection. That, in the long run, will also help China generate more business opportunities.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Beijing was a "wise choice" for hosting the Games. IOC head Jacques Rogge said his committee has no regrets over the decision it made back in 2001. This choice has been affirmed by the large increase in Olympic aficionados both in China and around the world.
