Updated: 2008-08-13 08:27 Six cities in the eastern part of Heilongjiang have made significant progress in the development of alternative industries, seen by planners as an inevitable move for resource-based cities to ensure sustainable development. They will next focus on alternative industries including new materials manufacturing, metallurgy, agricultural product processing, forest products processing, equipment manufacturing, biotechnology and modern services. New materials will include those made from chemicals and nonmetal engineering materials. The metallurgical industry will upgrade market-oriented production, adjust production structure and increase technological content. Russian iron ore resources will be used to build iron and steel projects with high added value. The main goals of agricultural product processing are to use advantages in local resources, employ advanced technologies and speed up improvements in the food sector. The wood processing industry intends to attract domestic and foreign capital, train a group of leading enterprises with advanced technology and equipment, speed up technological reform and development of exploration to form wood processing industrial groups. In the equipment manufacturing industry, the cities will enhance the ability of independent development and innovation, create new equipment manufacturing industrial groups based on coal, electricity, chemistry, metallurgical industry, material, agricultural products processing and other projects. The biotechnology industry will coordinate with scientific research and modern logistics and make better use of financing and information services so as to upgrade itself to a new level.
