Science helps shave off those split seconds

With one length to go in the US Olympic swimming trials' 400m IM, Michael Phelps was neck and neck with Ryan Lochte, but somehow Phelps emerged a half-body ahead out of the final turn and won in world-record time.
That sensational move sent swimming coaches and teams of scientists scurrying to examine underwater video of the turn to see how Phelps pulled off his signature magic trick.
What they found was startling. Rather than push off the wall at an angle toward the surface, as Lochte did, Phelps went down and deep, performing a dolphin kick and rocketing to the surface far beyond where Lochte was already stroking away.
