Special Supplement: Pingnan sings praises of ancient arts

A saying in northeast Fujian province tells how a troupe from Pingnan is ever-ready to fulfill anyone's wish to watch opera.

Pingnan county, famed in Fujian for folk opera, is giving a high priority to culture and ecology and aims to combine them through tourism.

According to a cultural survey, seven folk arts and operas are still alive in the Fujian city of Nanping: traditional operas from Siping, Pingjiang and Luantan, stringed puppet shows, stick puppet shows, Peking opera and Minju opera. Five of the styles date to the middle of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
