Special Supplement: Bridges link to Fujian's past

While beautiful to look at, covered wooden-arch bridges in Pingnan county of Fujian province are extraordinary in another way - they were built hundreds of years ago without a single nail.

Among the county's 13 covered wooden bridges, the most famous is Menzuo Bridge. It is almost exactly the same design as a bridge in a noted painting from the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Experts have hailed it as a wonder, as the technique used to build the bridge has been lost in Kaifeng of central China, where the painting originated.

At Tangkou village, 63 m-long Qiansheng Bridge cited as a classic example of its kind for its shape and complex structure - not only its arch pillars but also in towers at both ends.
