By Zhang Haizhou and Wang Jingqiong | China Daily | Updated: 2008-08-07 08:46

Having the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will show the world that the Games are truly universal, Carlos Roberto Osorio, secretary-general of Rio 2016 - the city's campaign committee - said yesterday in Beijing.

Rio de Janeiro, the second biggest city in Brazil, is bidding to host the 31st summer Olympics in eight years' time. If successful, it will also be the first time the Games has been awarded to a South American country.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will announce the winning bid in Copenhagen, Denmark, in October next year.
