Progressive school with global focus
Established 50 years ago in the Australian state of Victoria, Monash University is fairly new when compared to other prestigious educational institutions.
But, Ronald Fairchild, vice-president of advancement, sees the university's young age as an advantage.
"There is a real emphasis on looking toward the future and being progressive at Monash. We don't rest on our laurels," he said.
Because Australia has a small population, the university has had to look abroad to develop an international base and connect with the rest of the world.
With six locations in Australia and campuses in Malaysia and South Africa, Monash claims to be the most international university in the country. It currently has 56,000 students representing over 100 countries.
"The university values the essence and spirit that international students bring. International students are the lifeblood of the university in many respects," said Fairchild.
"We recognize that international students have different challenges and expectations than do domestic students. We want to make sure the total experience is positive," he added.
For five decades, Monash has recognized that international students look for prestige, excellent facilities, outstanding teaching staff, and a variety of courses in a school, according to Fairchild.
Monash also runs a global bachelor's program that allows students to take part of their studies at either the South Africa or Malaysia campus.
Recently, the university has improved its research capabilities and increased outside funding for research.
