Special supplement: Panda-monium in Sichuan

By Wen Jiao | China Daily | Updated: 2008-08-01 07:43

In the early morning of July 16, 2005, someone spotted a dark figure climbing over a 10-ft wall. Suspecting robbery, he called a few friends for help. When they closed in, they got a bigger surprise than they ever expected.

The "thief" was actually a giant panda - a wild one no less. Although Sichuan is home to 80 percent of the world's 1,500-some wild pandas, it is not every day that one of them takes a stroll into downtown Dujiangyan. The incident in 2005 was the first ever reported.

While being chased, she jumped up onto a tiled roof. One of the residents was amazed. "I never thought a panda could be as nimble as a ninja. A zoo panda cannot do that," he said.
