Liu explained in a BBS that her father had been diagnosed in 2004 with leukemia but, saying nothing, had continued working hard to support the family and pay her schooling. When Liu found out about the illness, and that more than 200,000 yuan ($29,000) is needed to treat it, she decided that after graduating she would sell five years of her working life to pay her father's medical fees. (Chongdu Commercial Daily) Farmer posing as land developer fools builders Fang Fulu, a farmer in Banan district, Chongqing municipality, has since June last year defrauded various construction companies out of 460,000 yuan ($66,700). He obtained the amount in deposits while posing as a real estate developer in possession of signed contracts with real estate companies. Chongqing's Yuzhong District Procuratorate ruled on Tuesday that Fang had committed contract fraud. The local court will make a judgment in due course. (Chongqing Times)
Students vend vegetables to build their characters A group of students in Chongqing municipality intent on a nitty-gritty taste of labor hardship spent last Tuesday afternoon selling vegetables. The local college organized the activity in which eight college students worked as vegetable vendors and two authentic vendors sat in the classroom to get a taste of student life. "This 'trading places' activity helps nurture our overall quality," Chen Shen, one of the participant students said. But after she stopped coming to do his housework, Wang discovered she had bought a house in the name of her son. After a thorough search, Wang found his erstwhile domestic help, and after tough negotiations agreed to pay her compensation in return for the house she had bought with his cash. (New Life Daily) 10 angry elephants surround villager's house Zhang Youping, a farmer and resident of a village in Mengla county, Yunnan province, was awakened on Sunday night when 10 disgruntled wild elephants surrounded his house. Zhang immediately contacted the forest police, who sent a dozen officers to sound an alert in the 10 sq km surrounding the village area and cordon off the road to it.
