Deng spells out policy on Taiwan

Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping has said that the mainland's policy toward Taiwan will not change when the country is reunified.

"In trying to accomplish the great cause of reunifying the country, we will give full consideration to terms that Taiwan can accept," Deng said, attaching importance to cooperation between Kuomintang and the Communist Party.

"Taiwan will be allowed to keep its own armed forces and central government will provide it with subsidies when it needs such help in case of financial difficulties," Deng said.

Minister urges sweeping changes in education

The Education Minister He Dongchang called for immediate and sweeping changes in China's education system.

The minister said primary school education should be made available to every child in China. And secondary schools should be reformed and expanded to turn out more qualified workers to speed up modernization.

He also proposed to encourage children under 15 who have dropped out to return to school.

Shanghai paper has 14-year-old as chief editor

A 14-year-old student is chief editor of a paper named "Small Masters", a newspaper launched by Shanghai youngsters on July 16.

The four-page newspaper, the first of its kind in China, presents news, features and photos by children, the majority of whom are under 14.

Shen Yimin, the chief editor, is a second year student of Xinning Middle School. The average age of the paper's editorial board is under 12 years.
