Taiwan post grad student accepted for judicial exam

A Taiwan student studying at the Guangzhou-based Sun Yat-sen University recently became the first Taiwan student on the mainland to take the national judicial examination.

The student surnamed Li completed his undergraduate law studies at the university, and embarked on postgraduate law studies there last year.

He signed up earlier this month for the national judicial examination, and received confirmation last week.

Li said that taking the exam and being an accredited lawyer is essential to his ambition to work on the mainland after graduation.

Five freshwater sturgeons presented to Hong Kong

The National Aquatic and Wild Animals Protection Branch has given five more sturgeons, a number correspondent to the five Olympic rings, to Hong Kong's Ocean Park since one of the five previously presented was killed by barracudas.

A special tank has been built to accommodate the five new fish, which are accustomed to living in a fresh water environment. Visitors will be able to see the rare sturgeons on August 8, opening day of Beijing Olympic Games.

Super senior enrolls for free at HK varsity

A 15-year-old gifted student from Guangdong province has been given a place at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), even though she has not taken the national college entrance exam.

But this second grade senior high school student of Guangdong province has achieved high scores in international exams such as SAT, in which she scored 2,330 out of 2,400 in section A and a maximum score of 2,400 in section B, and TOEFL, in which she scored 117 out of 120.

This impressive performance earned her a full scholarship to the National University of Singapore. She, however, had a greater preference for the university in Hong Kong.

After attending two interviews at the HKUST, this gifted girl was enrolled and waived tuition fees.

HK middle school students undergo PLA training

Two hundred Hong Kong middle school students are taking part in a military training course from July 13 to July 27 at a PLA Hong Kong Garrison military camp.

The 200 students, comprising 150 boys and 50 girls, were selected from more than 500 applicants from 180 middle schools.

Applicants, from the third and fourth grade of middle school, were required to be in tip-top physical shape and able to communicate in Putonghua. Training consists of physical training and moral ethics.

The organizer says boys and girls are treated equally.

Three similar training courses have been held in the past three years. The scheme is to be instituted as a yearly military summer camp for young Hong Kong adults.

Sales assistant wanted: Pisceans only need apply

The recruitment policy adopted by a children's goods store in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, is distinct for employing salespeople born under the Pisces sign of the zodiac only.

The owner of the store surnamed Zheng, who is in her 20s, said the policy was suggested by her sister, whose sign, unsurprisingly, is Pisces.

She believes that people born under this sign have pleasant, out-going personalities and good social skills.

"Salespeople at my store need to be endowed with social skills that enable them to establish rapport with both parents and children," Zheng said.
