When Xia went to a marriage agency in 2003 to find a life partner, he happened to meet Hu Zaimei, a divorced woman 52 years younger than him. Finding Xia to be an honest man as well as a practitioner of Chinese traditional medicine, Hu fell in love with him and they married in 2005. They have since been a devoted couple, often to be seen walking hand-in-hand along the street, much to the amusement of local passers by. He lost contact with his wife, who is 17 years younger than him, and his son, then 4, three years ago. Upon his recent return to Xiamen, Fujian, where he and his family formerly lived, Yang took out a newspaper advertisement asking for information about his wife and son. Many cheats responded to Yang's ad, claiming they could help upon receipt of cash sent through the post. Yang sent money to one such swindler, who immediately dropped from sight.
