Chamber members carry torch, highlight bonds

As the Olympic torch makes its way around the country, at least five members of American Chamber of Commerce in China (AmCham-China), including four board governors are serving as torchbearers.
The first three got their chance in Jingzhou, Hubei province.
Jim Gradoville became the 186th runner in the global tour, then took a moment to reflect on the changed tone of the event in light of the recent Sichuan earthquake.
"I wish to send the love, confidence and courage from the torch relay to those affected by the quake in Sichuan, including my colleagues working there, hoping they can overcome difficulties and move on in the near future," the Xinhua news agency quoted Gradoville as saying.
"As torchbearer, I continue my life's work as a bridge between China and the world," said Gradoville, who has lived in Beijing for 10 years and serves as president of United Technologies Corp China.
Two runners later, lucky number 188 was AmCham-China Chairman James Zimmerman. He emphasized the sense of community between the chamber and Chinese society.
"AmCham-China has built bridges of friendship between China and the United States, promoting mutual understanding and communication," Zimmerman said. "The torch (relay) provides a good opportunity for the two sides to know each other even better. "
Another runner in Jingzhou Chris Renner, president of Helios Partners China, said: "I think the Beijing Games have the potential to be the 'biggest Games ever' from a marketing and attendance view point."
AmCham-China board of governors John Holden and Gregory Gilligan also have the honor of carrying the torch - Holden in late June in Xining, Qinghai province and Gilligan in early August in Guang'an, Sichuan province.
"I believe deeply in the power of international exchanges such as the Olympics to promote understanding and peace," said Holden, chairman of Shaklee (China) Ltd.
"It is a great honor to play a role in this historic event by representing expatriates living in China."
