Updated: 2008-07-04 07:38 Lover reconsidered after loyalty test A man surnamed Wang of Shangqiu, Henan province, faces a breakup with his girlfriend surnamed Li, after paying another man to try to seduce her in order to test her loyalty to him. Wang, 20, and Li have been dating for more than a year. He was planning to tie the knot, but first wanted to test Li's loyalty. He paid his friend Zhao Peng 100 yuan ($14) to help him in this regard. Zhao, true to his word, used his mobile phone to sexually harass Li with calls and text messages in the month that followed. The plan culminated in Zhao's detention after Li reported him to the police, and Wang's having to bail him out. Since discovering the facts of the matter, Li is now reconsidering her relationship with Wang. (Dongfang Jinbao News) Musical fountain to be built in Changsha A 100-m-high musical fountain is to be built in the Juzizhou scenic spot of Changsha, capital of Hunan province. The project, located in front of the main gate of Juzizhou park, will be completed by the end of August and officially go into operation before National Day on October 1. The fountain is expected to become a new tourist attraction in the central metropolis. Local residents and tourists will be able to see (and hear) it from either bank of the Xiangjiang River that runs through the city. (Xiaoxiang Morning Post) Gas suicide attempt alarms neighborhood A 16-year-old boy surnamed Zhang's threat of suicide by gas poisoning badly scared many of his neighbors in Xuchang, Henan province, on Sunday. The incident occurred at 7:30 pm after Zhang and his mother had quarreled. The young man locked himself in at his home and turned on the gas declaring he would commit suicide. When a neighbor forced entry into the room in order to turn off the gas, Zhang stabbed him with a kitchen knife. Police were summoned and eventually removed Zhang from the scene at 9:30 pm. Fire fighters used water guns to saturate Zhang's apartment to prevent fire from breaking out. Zhang was taken to a nearby police substation for further questioning. (Dongfang Jinbao News)
Noble pursuits embroidered to pay medical bills Qu Lanjie, a 38-year-old mother and resident of Wuhan, Hubei province, hopes that her exquisite embroidery might raise the funds necessary to pay her son's medical bills. Qu, a farmer from the city's Zhijiang village, has embroidered a length of fabric 360 cm long and 150 cm wide with more than 3 million stitches during the past year while sitting at her son's hospital bedside. Qu's embroidery, which she has named Qin Qi Shu Hua Tu, pictures 18 ancient beauties playing music and chess, and writing and painting. Qu's 17-year-old son, who suffers from osteomyelitis and related complications, must stay in hospital for several more months in order to undergo needed operations.
