Hygiene law in force

China's first food hygiene law went into effect on July 1 throughout the country.

The law covers nine chapters and 45 articles, setting standards for food hygiene, addictives, containers, packaging, manufacture, management and supervision.

Because of development of China's economy, people have come to demand standards of food hygiene. China's expanding trade also requires an improvement in food hygiene.

Fines levied on violators of market prices

More than 200 violators of market prices have been fined a total of 13,000 yuan in Beijing since the beginning of 1983.

Most offenders were trading the daily necessities, grocery catering, grain food, medicine and services.

In one case, a grain dealer in Fangshan county sold flour at 0.23 yuan per jin (half a kg) instead of official price of 0.185 yuan.

People buy the Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping at a bookstore in Beijing. The books by Deng have become bestsellers in China.
