Updated: 2008-07-02 07:40 July 1, 1983 Zhanjiang harbor to be expanded According to port authorities, the construction of new harbor zone is underway in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, to meet the increasing international trades for China. When completed in 1985, the handling capacity of Zhanjiang harbor will increase from 11 to 15.85 million tons per year. Another five 10,000-ton deep-water docks and two 5,000-ton docks have been scheduled to be built. Two new oil corporations established Nanhai West Petroleum Corporation, based in Zhanjiang, and Nanhai East Petroleum Corporation, based in Guangzhou, have been established by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) on June 29. These two firms will be mandated to excuse contracts signed with foreign oil companies for joint exploration and development of oil resources in the South China Sea. Qin Wencai, CNOOC president, said.
