The man used a stone last Friday to break off the stalactite that had taken more than 10,000 years to form in an ice cavern in Diaoshuihu National Forest in Changchun, Jilin province.

Tianjin residents feast on shrimps coming up for air

Residents of Tianjin municipality along the Haihe River received an unexpected windfall of shrimps on Friday, thanks to a downpour the day before.

Upon seeing shoals of shrimps swimming close to the surface of the river on Friday morning, residents flocked with their fishing nets to the river. In just two hours, they fished out upward of 400 kg of shrimps, the smallest haul being a respectable 5 to 6 kg.

Heavy rains swelled the river, and the low air pressure and consequent oxygen deficiency that followed forced them to rise to the water surface for fresh air. Some of them actually died of hypoxia, one expert said, and advised against eating shrimps found floating belly-up.
