Unemployment tabulated

Beijing municipality raised its monthly unemployment insurance payment threshold by 80 yuan ($11) yesterday.

This marks the ninth such adjustment since the city introduced the unemployment insurance system in November 1999, according to the municipal labor and social security department.

There are five categories of unemployment payment, based on the length of time of contributions. A minimum monthly sum of 502 yuan applies to contributions over a period of less than five years. Contributions of 20 years or more qualify for a monthly 611 yuan. But all claimants receive the minimum 502 yuan after being unemployed for a year.

Photographer sues

Hou Yibing, a member of China Photographers Association, took the Shandong Education Press and the Chinese Academy of Sciences to Beijing's Xicheng district court yesterday for copyright infringements, the Legal Mirror reported yesterday.

Hou found 192 photos that had been taken by him in a book entitled Album of Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences published by Shandong Education Press, but without any accreditation.

The suit, which involves a 200,000 yuan ($38,300) compensation settlement, is the largest photo copyright infringement case accepted by Beijing courts.
