Sino-Thai ties

President Hu Jintao said yesterday that China was ready to work with Thailand to expand and deepen strategic cooperation.

Hu told Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej during their meeting that China values relations with Thailand and unswervingly seeks to push forward China-Thailand friendship and cooperation.

Hu spoke highly of Thailand's priority in developing relations with China, and applauded Thailand's support of China in a number of major issues concerning Taiwan, Tibet and the Beijing Olympic Games.

Energy saving 'tough task'

Industries with high energy consumption and emissions are developing too fast in China, amid quick economic growth, the State Council warned yesterday.

Meeting energy-saving and emission-reduction targets set in the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-10) remained an arduous task, State Councilors agreed at a meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.

Industries with high energy consumption and pollution should be resolutely curbed, and land use, energy consumption and environment impact assessment should be considered in approving new projects, the State Council said.

Water poisoning

More than 60 children fell sick after drinking water suspected of being deliberately poisoned at a primary school in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region yesterday.

Thirty-four of the children were still being treated at the People's Hospital of Guanyang county, where the incident happened, said Zou Xin, the county's deputy head. The rest were under observation at the school.

Police found the water of the school's storage tank smelling of pesticide, with an ivory-colored substance floating in it. An empty soda bottle, suspected of containing the poison, was found beside the tank.
