Sing when you're winning

By Dania Karina | China Daily | Updated: 2008-06-27 07:52

The pretty little 9-year-old girl anxiously scans the crowded Jakarta Convention Center looking for her parents. She spots them sitting at the far left corner of the auditorium. Mom, dad, and Lyra - her favorite doll atop her mother's lap - have all come to watch her sing for the Indonesian president.

Thirteen years later, resplendent in a black velvet dress laced with silver sequins, Agnes Mutiara Sannie glitters before the camera, captivating millions of CCTV-9 viewers with her sensuous voice and performance.

Sannie's sultry voice and powerful stage presence won her the 2007 Chinese Singing Contest for International students in Beijing even though her first language is Bahasa Indonesian.
